AOKI Masahiko is President of RIETI and Senior Fellow and Henri and Tomoye Takahashi Professor of Japanese Studies at Stanford University. Dr. Aoki has taught at Tokyo, Keio and Kyoto Universities, as well as Harvard University and the London School of Economics. He specializes in comparative institutional analysis, corporate governance, the theory of the firm, and the Japanese economy. He has published numerous works, including Toward a Comparative Institutional Analysis (MIT Press, 2001). Dr. Aoki received his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota.

Franklin ALLEN is Co-Director of the Wharton Financial Institutions Center and Professor of Finance and Economics at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. He is also Director of the Glenmede Fund, Inc and an adjunct professor at the Stern School of Business, New York University. From 1992 to 1993, he was Editor of Journal of Financial Intermediation and co-authored Comparing Financial Systems (MIT Press, 2001). Dr. Allen received his D.Phil. From Oxford University.

HOSHI Takeo is Faculty Fellow at RIETI and Pacific Economic Cooperation Professor in International Economic Relations at Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). He is also Editor in Chief of the Journal of the Japanese and International Economies and author of Corporate Financing and Governance in Japan: The Road to the Future (MIT Press, 2001). Dr. Hoshi specializes in Japanese corporate governance. He received his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Curtis J. MILHAUPT is Fuyo Professor of Law and Director of the Center for Japanese Legal Studies at Columbia Law School. Prior to joining the Columbia Law School faculty in 1999, Dr. Milhaupt practiced law at Shearman & Sterling in New York and Tokyo. In 2002, he served as a Visiting Fellow at RIETI and is the editor of Global Markets, Domestic Institutions: Corporate Law and Governance in a New Era of Cross-Border Deals (forthcoming, Columbia University Press). SHISHIDO Zenichi is Professor, Faculty of Law at Seikei University and Expert Member of the Committee on Legal Reform on Corporate Law at the Ministry of Justice. Previously, he served as Visiting Professor at Columbia University and the University of California at Berkeley. His major publications include "Reform in Japanese Corporate Law and Corporate Governance: Current Changes in Historical Perspective," American Journal of Comparative Law (2001). Dr. Shishido received his LLB from the University of Tokyo.

Oren SUSSMAN is University Lecturer in Management Studies at the Said Business School, Oxford University and Senior Lecturer at Ben-Gurion University. From 1999 to 2000 he was Visiting Associate Professor at the London Business School, and from 1988 to 1990 he was Visiting Lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania's economics department. He is author of "Economic Growth with Standardized Contracts," forthcoming, European Economic Review . Dr. Sussman received his Ph.D. from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

XU Peng is Faculty Fellow at RIETI and Professor of Finance and Economics at Hosei University. From 1993 to 2000 he was Associate Professor at Hosei University, and before then he was Assistant Professor from 1992 to 1993. He is currently investigating executive bonuses and managerial incentives in Japan. Dr. XU is author of "Economic analysis on the legislation for stock options in Japan", Commercial Law Review 1467,1997. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo.

MIYAJIMA Hideaki is Faculty Fellow at RIETI and Special Research Fellow at the Policy Research Institute of the Ministry of Finance. He is also Adjunct Professor at Chung-Ang University and Director of the Institute of Financial Studies and Professor at Waseda University. Previously, Dr. Miyajima served as Research Associate at the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Tokyo, and Visiting Scholar at Harvard's Reischauer Institute. He co-edited Japan - Change and Continuity , Routledge Curson, 2002. Dr. Miyajima received his Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo.

ARIKAWA Yasuhiro is Faculty Fellow at RIETI and Associate Professor, Faculty of Literature and Social Sciences at Yamagata University. Colin MAYER is Peter Moores Professor of Management Studies at the Said Business School, University of Oxford, Professorial Fellow at Wadham College, Oxford and Director of the Oxford Financial Research Centre. From 2000 to 2001, he was the Leo Goldschmidt Visiting Professor in Corporate Governance at the Solvay Business School, Universite Libre de Bruxelles. Gregory JACKSON is Fellow at RIETI. From 1992 to 1993, he was Research Scientist at the London School of Economics Centre for Economic Performance and from 1996 to 2002 he was Research Scientist at the Max-Planck-Institute for the Study of Societies. Dr. Jackson's expertise includes Corporate Governance, Economic Sociology, and Comparative and Historical Methods. He is author of "The Cross-National Diversity of Corporate Governance: Dimensions and Determinants," Academy of Management Review (forthcoming in 2003). ABE Masahiro is Associate Professor at Dokkyo University. From 1998 to 2000 he served as Associate Professor at the Institute of Economics Research, Hitotsubashi University, after which he joined RIETI as Fellow. Mr. Abe's area of expertise is labor economics and he is author of "Corporate Governance Structure and Employment Adjustment in Japan: An Empirical Analysis Using Corporate Finance Data," Industrial Relations . Prior to joining the CSRC, Dr. Tong was Private Sector Development Specialist at the World Bank/International Finance Corporation. HU Angang is Professor at the School of Public Policy & Management of Tsinghua University and Director of Center for China Studies at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tsinghua University. He is also a member of the consultant committee, the Ministry of Labour and Social Security and a member of the Group for China Study of Chinese Academy of Sciences. He was visiting professor at the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University in 2001, and co-authored The Political Economy of Uneven Development: The Case of China (M.E. Sharp, 1999). He received his Ph.D. from the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

TSURU Kotaro is Senior Fellow at RIETI. Previously, he was Research Economist at the Bank of Japan's Institute of Monetary and Economic Studies. From 1995 to 2000, Dr. Tsuru served as Staff Economist at the OECD.
