2026 Kumamoto Earthquake: The problem is not resource shortage but a lack of accessibility Digital Twins for Envisioning the Impact of Loss

Dear Readers,

Welcome to RIETI Report. This bi-weekly newsletter will keep you updated with the recent columns, event information and research results by RIETI fellows and other leading economists in Japan and around the world.

In this edition, we feature topics related to building resilient societies amid today’s complex challenges. Utilizing satellite observation data and official statistics from the 2026 Kumamoto Earthquake, RIETI Faculty Fellow Dr. Shunsuke Managi and his research team examine disaster impacts, including health risks among older adults, emergency medical needs, water supply disruptions, and other critical issues. Based on the results of the analysis, they found how specific accessibility information and data-driven policymaking can help communities better withstand future shocks.

If you have any feedback, we would love to hear from you (news-info@rieti.go.jp).
