Overview

AI is not only being used to improve the efficiency of routine tasks. It is also being used in creative human activities, including innovation. As seen in the example of AlphaFold in pharmaceutical development, AI is contributing to the advancement of science and technology. At the same time, the advancement of AI systems is supported by advances in the domain knowledge in the fields where AI is applied, so the advancement of AI and innovation are complementary. In this study, we use technical document information such as papers and patents, as well as firm-level survey data and web scraped information to clarify the actual state of the interrelationship between AI and innovation at public research institutions such as universities and at companies, and to derive policy implications regarding the ecosystem formed by universities, startup companies, large corporations, and other entities.
