Overview
It is important for Japanese industry to enhance its ability to sustainably realize innovation by taking advantage of innovation opportunities such as advances in AI, etc., in order to increase the rate of economic growth over the long term and to solve social issues such as environmental problems. However, it has been pointed out that the innovation performance of Japanese industry has been declining, and the basic objective of this study is to analyze the actual situation and causes of this decline from an international perspective, while also examining the effectiveness of policies and institutions in promoting innovation to date and obtaining suggestions for the way forward. This study will address the following four research topics. The study will examine the innovation capacity of Japanese industry, research on the R&D support system, the function of the patent system and the effects of its reform, and environmental innovation.
