Overview

This project is a historical study on the policy related to Japan’s machine tool industry during the first 20 years of this century. Today, this industry is facing a competitive environment that is very different from the era when it rose to No.1 in the world due to the success of NC machine tools. In recent years, Japan’s rivals China and Germany have been promoting strategic initiatives at the national level to strengthen the competitiveness of their industries. In this study we will examine how METI has perceived the various issues in this industry during this period, what kind of initiatives it has implemented, and what results they produced. We will also study Germany, as the most important benchmark for Japan’s machine tool industry, to explore the measures they have taken to strengthen their competitiveness and their results, and compare them with those in Japan.
