RIETI - RIETI-CEPR Symposium - Migration and Labor Markets: The Cases of Europe and Japan

In this edition, we feature topics related to labor market transformation. Japan is experiencing rapid population aging and decline ahead of other advanced economies, which are increasingly relying on migration to address their own labor shortages. Drawing on evidence from Switzerland, the United States and Japan, a symposium jointly hosted by RIETI and CEPR explored the economic and social implications of migration and discussed policy approaches to managing migration and promoting integration.

Migration and Labor Markets: The Cases of Europe and Japan

As demographic shifts continue to reshape advanced economies, they have increasingly relied on migration as a component of their labor supply. At the same time, ensuring the successful social and economic integration of migrants remains a major policy challenge. This symposium explored recent migration trends and their effects on labor markets, with a particular focus on countries such as the United States and Switzerland, which have experienced significant migration-related developments. It also examined the role and characteristics of foreign workers in Japan’s labor market. Drawing on recent research, the symposium illustrated migration from multiple perspectives, including labor market dynamics, institutional frameworks, and social integration. Through these discussions, participants considered future policy options and directions for managing migration and promoting integration.
