Sustainable Growth of the Japanese Economy: Evidence-Based Policy Recommendations

Since its establishment in April 2001, RIETI has been conducting wide ranging policy research. Our book Sustainable Growth of the Japanese Economy: Evidence-Based Policy Recommendations published by the University of Tokyo Press was written with the primary objectives to summarize the research results during the third medium-term plan period (April 2011-March 2015) and outline the results of our major research programs and their policy implications in an easily understood manner.

The Japanese economy is entering into a new phase due to globalization, consequences of the Great East Japan Earthquake, and a depopulating society. This book consisting of eight chapters was edited by former RIETI President Masahisa Fujita, with each chapter written by the respective program directors of our eight research programs (International Trade and Investment, International Macroeconomics, Regional Economies, Technology and Innovation, Raising Industrial and Firm Productivity, New Industrial Policy, Human Capital, Social Security, Taxation, and Public Finance). It clarifies the issues facing the Japanese economy and provides proposals to promote sustainable economic activities based on evidence.

We hope this book will further deepen your understanding of RIETI's past research results and build momentum in re-acknowledging the importance of evidence-based policy formation.
