RIETI Program Director and Faculty Fellow NAGAOKA Sadao Receives 5th Japan Statistical Society Takahide Nakamura Award

NAGAOKA Sadao's photoProgram Director and Faculty Fellow NAGAOKA Sadao has been awarded the 5th Japan Statistical Society Nakamura Takahide Award.

As Program Director of RIETI's Innovation Program, Nagaoka has led numerous research projects, including "Assessment of the Innovation Capability of Japanese Industry from an International Perspective.” The rationale for Nagaoka receiving the award include: (1) his outstanding contributions to innovation research using statistical analysis, which has earned him international acclaim, and in particular his contributions to evidence-based policy formation through his research on patent system reform using statistical analysis; (2) The development and analysis of new statistical data that aggregates inventor-level data has deepened our understanding of the processes of invention creation and commercialization. Additionally, (3) he was recognized for his active engagement in a wide range of initiatives, including developing and promoting the use of intellectual property statistics to support decision-making by the Japanese government and businesses, as well as making intellectual contributions to activities at the Japan Patent Office and the OECD. Previously, Dr. Nagaoka received the 65th Nikkei Prize for Excellent Books in Economic Science in 2022 for his book Economics of Invention: Knowledge Creation for Innovation, which is based on the results of research projects at the Research Institute of Economy, Trade and Industry and other institutions, and in 2021 he received the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award for his contributions to the development of the intellectual property system.
