The Research Institute of Economy, Trade and Industry (RIETI), a policy-oriented think-tank affiliated with the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), is an incorporated administrative agency with non-civil servant status. It was established on April 1, 2001 as a new platform to bring about creative and innovative policy debates based on world-class research, analysis and policy studies from mid- and long-term strategic perspectives.

The Research Institute of Economy, Trade and Industry (RIETI), is accepting applications for three posts of Resident Fellow or Senior Fellow, one each in the following research areas:

  1. Social security systems in Japan, particularly the pension system: How to design a "pay as you go" system sustainable in Japan
  2. Sustainability of public debt in Japan: How to resolve Japan's large public debt.
  3. Macroeconomic policy in Japan, particularly financial and fiscal policy: Examining exit mechanisms from Japan's deflation

The successful applicant will be a scholar of high international stature and will conduct research and policy analysis across a broad range of issues that touch upon one of the aforementioned three themes.

Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in economics, and have several years of post-doctoral academic or policy-related experience, with a proven record of publishing in professional or academic journals, edited volumes, or other publications. A candidate who blends academic excellence with strong interests and/or experience in policy-making is preferred. The individual would be expected to work on policy-relevant discussion papers of high academic standard and/or book length project and conduct seminars throughout the research process, interact with the other scholars at the RIETI, the wider policy community and the media. The successful candidate will also contribute to results dissemination activities through RIETI's website, newsletters and other media.

The applicant should be fluent in either Japanese or English. The working language of the Institute is Japanese, but staff/secretarial services can be provided in English. In-house seminars, workshops and other meetings are conducted either in Japanese or English depending on the participation.

Appointment will be at a Fellow or Senior Fellow level for an initial period of one year starting at the latest from 1 April 2005, with the possibility of renewal upon performance. Salary will depend upon the candidate's experience and will be comparable to that offered to researchers of foreign nationals at universities or other think-tanks located in Japan (approximately within the range of JPY 8 million to 12 million gross p.a. all inclusive except for transportation costs for daily commute). In addition, one round-trip airfare to and from Tokyo, for the (Senior) Fellow and accompanying family members will be provided.
