RIETI Policy Symposium

Metanational Management and Global Innovation: The Case of the TFT-LCD Industry

Announcement

In an increasingly globalized economy and the shift to a knowledge economy, the survival of Japanese corporations amid global competition is being seen to hinge on how well they apply global management. During "Global Management and Innovation in Japanese Enterprises - The Strengths of Global Management and Further Challenges," a RIETI Policy Symposium held in January 2006, one of the best models was introduced, together with some successful cases. This model is known as "metanational management," in which corporations, rather than complacently following strategies that depend only on the advantages of their own firms or home countries, seek to build competitive global advantage by acquiring and leveraging resources around the world.

Since the symposium, RIETI has conducted more detailed analysis to clarify how firms adopt metanational management and the effects they achieve. The findings indicate that in East Asia's TFT-LCD industry, which is facing tough competition and collaboration, or division of labor and integration, both metanational management strategies and non-metanational management strategies are applied intricately and dynamically.

In the keynote speech of this year's symposium, Professor Thomas Murtha (University of Illinois at Chicago / University of Minnesota) will present prospects for the role of metanational management in the TFT-LCD industry. This will be followed by an introduction of the latest trends and developments in the TFT-LCD industry, and both the metanational and non-metanational competition strategies of leading TFT-LCD manufacturers in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. Then, in a panel discussion, the issues and challenges of metanational management will be examined from a global perspective, in terms of aspects such as industry structure, organizational structure, and policymaking. Through this discussion, we will explore the new possibilities of management strategies and policy implications based on a long-term perspective.
