Introduction to China Industrial Productivity (CIP) Database 3.0

The CIP 3.0 Database

The China Industrial Productivity (CIP) Database Round 3.0 (2015) has been released and is available to the research community. The CIP 3.0 (2015) Database extends the earlier rounds of the database, including CIP 1.0 (2011) released, and CIP 2.0 (2013), CIP 2.1 and 2.2 (2014) for internal use only. This is the first time for the CIP database to include the CIP estimates in input-output table time series in both nominal and real terms, investment and capital stock estimates, and capital and labor input indices.

The CIP 3.0 (2015) Database extends the time series in the earlier rounds from 1987-2008 to a new one from 1980-2010 (starting from 1981 for the released input-output table series). The CIP standard industrial classification also has been revised, from 34 in CIP 1.0 (2011) to 37 sectors.

However, CIP data users should be fully aware of the potential data problems in the CIP series after 2007/08. This is because most of the information available for the most recent benchmark used in the CIP industry-level data construction is from 2007 or 2008 (including the full-scale input-output accounts for 2007, the CHIP household income survey data for 2007, and China's 2008 economic census). Assumptions were necessary to extend the CIP series to 2010. Therefore, we expect to have some major revisions to the period 2008-2012/13 in the next round of the CIP data work, which is to be released in early 2017.
