Dr. Keiichi Tsunekawa graduated from the Department of Arts and Sciences of the University of Tokyo in 1971. He holds an M.A. in International Relations from the University of Tokyo and a Ph.D. in Political Science from Cornell University. He taught at the Department of Arts and Sciences of the University of Tokyo between 1981 and 2008 and at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) in 2008. He became a Director of the JICA Research Institute, which was newly established to strengthen the research capabilities of the former Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC). His fields of academic research cover political economy, regional integration and democratization mainly focusing on East Asia and Latin America.
Major works: Nature of democratic commitment in Asia , Political Science in Asia 2(2), 2006; Remapping East Asia: construction of a region , Cornell University Press, 2005; The state and private enterprises , University of Tokyo Press, 1996 (in Japanese).

Dr. Masahisa Fujita served as Professor of the Institute of Economic Research at Kyoto University; President of the Institute of Developing Economies - JETRO (2003-2007); and Professor in the Department of Economics/Regional Science at the University of Pennsylvania. Mr. Risaburo Nezu has served as Director at RIETI since 2001. He has also been a senior executive fellow at Fujitsu Research Institute's Economic Research Center since 2001, and was also senior managing director at FRI from 2004-2009. He became director general for the Directorate of Science, Technology and Industry of the OECD in 1995, and councilor at the Permanent Mission of Delegation of Japan to the OECD in 1984. Mr. Nezu joined the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) (now the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry) after graduating from the University of Tokyo's Faculty of Economics in 1970, later going on to obtain an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1975.

Dr. Shujiro Urata received his B.A. in Economics from Keio University (1973), and his M.A. (1976) and Ph.D. (1978) in Economics from Stanford University. He worked at the Brookings Institution, Washington, DC (1978-81) and The World Bank (1981-86). Since 1986, he has served as a lecturer, Assistant Professor, and Professor of the Faculty of Social Sciences, at Waseda University, as well as working at the Economic Research Institute, Economic Planning Agency (1995-1999) and the People's Finance Corporation Research Institute (1997-1999). He has also been a Research Fellow, at the Japan Center for Economic Research since 1995. His expertise is in international economics and development economics.

Currently, Dr. Biswa N. Bhattacharyay is the Special Advisor to Dean of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Institute (ADBI) and the Task Manager of the ADB/ADBI's Flagship Study on "Infrastructure for a Seamless Asia." He is on a secondment from ADB, Manila. Prior to joining ADBI, he served ADB as the Principal Reform Coordination Specialist and Advisor to the Managing Director General with the ADB's Office of the President. Previously he worked with ADB's Office of Regional Economic Integration, Strategy and Policy Department and Economic Research Department. Prior to joining ADB, he worked in various senior capacities with the following organizations: (i) Chief Researcher and Training advisor, Kuwait Central Bank, (ii) Economic Advisor in the Economic Policy and Research Dept., Qatar Central Bank, (iii) Professor with-National Institute of Bank Management of India, National Institute of Industrial Engineering of India, Indian Statistical Institute, and University of Missouri-Columbia.
Dr. Bhattacharyay obtained his Ph.D. from Iowa State University and a BS (Hons.) and M.S. from the Indian Statistical Institute. He is currently a Fellow of Center for Economic Studies of CESIfo institute, a joint initiative of the University of Munich and Ifo Institute for Economic research, Munich.

Dr. Hadi Soesastro is a senior economist at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). He was the Executive Director of CSIS as well as a member of the National Economic Council, an advisory council of President Abdurrahman Wahid, from December 1999 to September 2000. Furthermore, he is also a member of the international advisory boards of various international institutions, including The Asia Society, New York.
He is an Adjunct Professor at the Research School of Pacific Asian Studies (RSPAS) at the Australian National University. In addition to lecturing at national universities, he has taught at Columbia University (New York). He is also a member of the editorial board of a number of international journals, including the ASEAN Economic Bulletin (Singapore) and the Bulletin of Indonesian Economic Studies (Canberra).
Dr. Soesastro received his Ph.D. from the Rand Graduate School in Santa Monica, California.

Dr. Eiji Ogawa has been Professor of Graduate School of Commerce and Management at Hitotsubashi University since 1999, and was appointed Dean in 2009. Prior to his current positions, Dr. Ogawa was a Visiting Scholar at the Department of Economics of Harvard University (1986-1988); the Department of Economics of the University of California, Berkeley (1992-1993); and the Research Department of the International Monetary Fund (2000). Dr. Ogawa has published many papers on issues concerning exchange rate systems in East Asia, and updates the Asian Monetary Unit (AMU) and AMU Deviation Indicators for the RIETI website every week.
Dr. Ogawa graduated from the Graduate School of Commerce and Management, Hitotsubashi University in 1986 and obtained a Ph.D. in Commerce from Hitotsubashi University in 1999.

Dr. Chalongphob Sussangkarn is currently a Distinguished Fellow of the Thailand Development Research Institute, the organization for which he served as president from 1996-2007. In March 2007, he became Thailand's Minister of Finance, a position he held until February 2008. He has also served as a lecturer of economics at U.C. Berkeley and worked as an economist at the World Bank. He has published more than 140 publications, research papers, and presentations, and he served as director to a number of major research projects, including the Regional Project on Indicators and Analyses of Vulnerabilities to Economic Crisis for the East Asian Development Network (2002) and the Macroeconomic Model Project for the Budget Bureau (2000-2001). Dr. Chalongphob holds a bachelor's, master's and doctorate degree in economics from the University of Cambridge.

Dr. Iwan Azis has addressed and published topics of financial economics, economic modeling, and the linkages between macro-financial policy and social issues. During the last 5 years he has published 25 articles, and is currently writing two books, one on the elements of financial crises and another on managing conflict resolution. He has conducted research and consulting work for various international organizations and universities. In early 1998, he spoke before the Joint Economic Committee (JEC) of the U.S. Congress on the Asian Crisis along with the deputy Prime Ministers of Thailand and Korea. The recent award he received was for "Distinguished Scholar in Regional Science, Financial Economics, and Economic Modeling," presented at the Instituto Superior de Ciencias do Trabalho e da Empresa (ISCTE) Business School, Lisbon, Portugal, July 2006.

Dr. V.N Rajasekharan Pillai is the Vice-Chancellor (President) of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), a Central Public University instituted by an Act of Indian Parliament in 1985. He is also the Chairman of the Distance Education Council which is responsible for the quality, standards and accreditation of the open and distance learning higher education system in India. He has been serving as a teacher and educational administrator in India for the last 38 years. Dr. Pillai has also served as the Vice-Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi University, Cochin University of Science & Technology, Executive Director of the National Assessment & Accreditation Council and Vice-Chairman and Chairman of the University Grant Commission, Government of India. He is a Fellow of Indian Academy of Sciences and Honorary Senior Fellow of the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore. As a researcher in the field of Chemical Sciences, Dr. Pillai has published over 180 papers in refereed international journals and has a patent to his credit. His publications have received more than 2100 citations during the last 20 years and he is one among the top-cited chemists in the country. He has held visiting Researcher/Professor positions at the Universities of Tübingen (Germany), Mainz (Germany), and Lausanne (Switzerland). He was conferred the Presidential Gold Medal of the Indian Science Congress by the Prime Minister of India in 2008 and in 2007 he was conferred the Triennial M.V. Pylee Award for the top academician of India by the Cochin University of Science Technology.

He graduated from the Supreme Court Legal Research and Training Institute and was admitted to the bar in 1996. He has broad experience in legal practices and is a member of the Committee on International Relations of Japan Federation of Bar Associations. Mr. Sato received his B.A. in Law from Chuo University (1992), his Diploma in Development Economics from the Institute of Developing Economies Advanced School (2003) and his LL.M. in Law and Development from the University of London (2004).

Dr. Manas Chatterji is Professor of Management and Adjunct Professor in Economics and the Asian and Asian-American Studies Program at Binghamton University, State University of New York and Guest Professor, Peking University, Distinguished Professor in Poznan University, Poland. He is also an elected member of the Polish Academy of Science - Committee on Regional Planning. He was also an Honorary Distinguished Professor at the Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta, India and George Mason University, U.S., and is currently a fellow of the international organization Economists for Peace and Security. He previously taught at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and has held visiting appointments at Cornell University, Erasmus University, the University of Karlsruhe, the University of Munster and many other universities in the United States, Europe, Asia, and South Africa. He has served as a consultant to the World Bank and United Nations and has organized international meetings on health care, technology management, and disaster management in many countries including Japan, China, and Russia.
During his career, Dr. Chatterji has edited three journals and has served on editorial boards of many others. He is the General Editor of a book series on Contributions to Conflict Management, Peace Economics and Development , Elsevier Publishing Co., Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He has published 30 books and about 80 scholarly articles in the areas of technology management, regional science, health care management, energy and environmental management, urban management, military spending, disarmament, economic conversion, and conflict management. He is in the process of establishing the Mahatma Gandhi International Center for Conflict Prevention and Management located in Sydney, Australia. Dr. Ling Xue holds various positions such as Secretary-General, Regional Science Association of China; Director, MPA Education Center, Peking University; Deputy Director, CURDR, Peking University; Associate Professor, School of Government, Peking University. His field of research includes regional economics, urban and regional planning, and project management.
Dr. Xue received his B.A. in Plant Genetics, South China Agriculture University, China (1992), M.A. in System Engineering and Management Engineering, The Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (1998), and his Ph.D. in Regional Economics, Department of Urban and Environmental Science, Peking University (2002).
