Dr. Masahisa Fujita served as Professor of the Institute of Economic Research at Kyoto University; President of the Institute of Developing Economies - JETRO (2003-2007); and Professor in the Department of Economics/Regional Science at the University of Pennsylvania. His research and teaching interests are urban economics, regional economics, international trade, and spatial economics. He holds a Ph.D. in Regional Science from the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Keiichi Tsunekawa graduated from the Department of Arts and Sciences of the University of Tokyo in 1971. He holds an M.A. in International Relations from the University of Tokyo and a Ph.D. in Political Science from Cornell University. He taught at the Department of Arts and Sciences of the University of Tokyo between 1981 and 2008 and at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) in 2008. He became a Director of the JICA Research Institute, which was newly established to strengthen the research capabilities of the former Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC). His fields of academic research cover political economy, regional integration and democratization mainly focusing on East Asia and Latin America.
Major works: Nature of democratic commitment in Asia , Political Science in Asia 2(2), 2006; Remapping East Asia: construction of a region , Cornell University Press, 2005; The state and private enterprises , University of Tokyo Press, 1996 (in Japanese).

Dr. Walter Isard, emeritus professor of economics and regional science, was one of the pioneers in the field of regional science. The author of Location and Space Economy: A General Theory Relating to Industrial Location, Market Areas, Land Use, Trade and Urban Structures, his current research interests are conflict management and regional economics and integrated multi-region and world ecologic-economic models. Dr. Hadi Soesastro is a senior economist at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). He was the Executive Director of CSIS as well as a member of the National Economic Council, an advisory council of President Abdurrahman Wahid, from December 1999 to September 2000. Furthermore, he is also a member of the international advisory boards of various international institutions, including The Asia Society, New York.
He is an Adjunct Professor at the Research School of Pacific Asian Studies (RSPAS) at the Australian National University. In addition to lecturing at national universities, he has taught at Columbia University (New York). He is also a member of the editorial board of a number of international journals, including the ASEAN Economic Bulletin (Singapore) and the Bulletin of Indonesian Economic Studies (Canberra).
Dr. Soesastro received his Ph.D. from the Rand Graduate School in Santa Monica, California.

Dr. Masahiro Kawai joined ADBI as Dean in January 2007. He taught economics at the Johns Hopkins University as an assistant and an associate professor (1978-86) and at the University of Tokyo as an associate and full professor (1986-2008). He served as the World Bank's Chief Economist for the East Asia and Pacific Region (1998-2001), as Deputy Vice Minister of Finance for International Affairs (2001-2003) and as Special Advisor to the President of the Asian Development Bank on regional economic cooperation and integration (2005-2007). He graduated with his B.A. and M.A. degrees in 1971 and 1973, respectively, in Economics from the University of Tokyo. He earned a Ph.D. degree in Economics from Stanford University in 1978.
Dr. Kawai has written numerous books and papers on international finance and open macroeconomics, Asian economy and finance, regional economic integration, and international and regional currency arrangements.

Dr. Yuyan Zhang received his Bachelor's degree from Beijing University, Master's degree and Ph.D. in Economics from the Graduate School of CASS. He was Professor and Director of Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies, CASS from 2007-'09. He was appointed Director of IWEP in June 2009. His field of research includes Institutional Economics and International Political Economy.

Dr. T. J. Pempel (Ph.D., Columbia) joined Berkeley's Political Science Department in July 2001 and served as director of the Institute of East Asian Studies from 2002 until 2006, where he held the Il Han New Chair in Asian Studies. Just prior to coming to Berkeley, he was at the University of Washington in Seattle, where he was the Boeing Professor of International Studies in the Jackson School of International Studies and an adjunct professor in Political Science. From 1972 to 1991, he was on the faculty at Cornell University; he was also Director of Cornell's East Asia Program. He has also been a faculty member at the University of Colorado and the University of Wisconsin.
Dr. Pempel's research and teaching focus on comparative politics, political economy, contemporary Japan, and Asian regionalism.

Dr. Min Gyo Koo has been Assistant Professor of Political Science at Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea since 2007. Prior to his current position, he was Adjunct Professor in International Relations and Research Fellow at the Korean Studies Institute and the Korean Economic Institute at the University of Southern California. His research focuses on territorial disputes in East Asia and economic and security regionalism. Most recently he has written about regionalism in the context of the Dokdo/Takeshima, Senkaku/Diaoyu, Paracel, and Spratly island chain disputes that have embroiled East Asia. Dr. Koo holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley, an M.A. in International Relations and International Economics from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), and an M.A. in Public Policy from the Seoul National University Graduate School of Public Administration.

Mr. Naoki Umemiya joined JICA in April 1997. Since then he has been mainly in charge of education development programs in Southeast Asian countries at the Headquarters and at the Research Institute. From 2005 to 2009, he was stationed in Bangkok, Thailand, and served for the ASEAN University Network/Southeast Asian Engineering Education Development Network (SEED-Net) as a JICA expert. He was seconded by JICA to work for the Human Development Unit of East Asia and the Pacific Region of the World Bank from 2002 to 2003. He graduated from the Faculty of Sociology of Hitotsubashi University in 1997, and holds an M.Ed. in International Education Policy from Harvard Graduate School of Education. Dr. V.N Rajasekharan Pillai is the Vice-Chancellor (President) of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), a Central Public University instituted by an Act of Indian Parliament in 1985. He is also the Chairman of the Distance Education Council which is responsible for the quality, standards and accreditation of the open and distance learning higher education system in India. He has been serving as a teacher and educational administrator in India for the last 38 years. Dr. Pillai has also served as the Vice-Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi University, Cochin University of Science & Technology, Executive Director of the National Assessment & Accreditation Council and Vice-Chairman and Chairman of the University Grant Commission, Government of India. He is a Fellow of Indian Academy of Sciences and Honorary Senior Fellow of the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore. As a researcher in the field of Chemical Sciences, Dr. Pillai has published over 180 papers in refereed international journals and has a patent to his credit. His publications have received more than 2100 citations during the last 20 years and he is one among the top-cited chemists in the country. He has held visiting Researcher/Professor positions at the Universities of Tübingen (Germany), Mainz (Germany), and Lausanne (Switzerland). He was conferred the Presidential Gold Medal of the Indian Science Congress by the Prime Minister of India in 2008 and in 2007 he was conferred the Triennial M.V. Pylee Award for the top academician of India by the Cochin University of Science Technology.

Dr. John Ravenhill was previously Associate Professor at the University of Sydney, Assistant Professor at the University of Virginia, and has been a Visiting Professor at the International University of Japan, the Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore, and at the University of California, Berkeley. His recent books include Global Political Economy (editor), 2005; Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation: The Construction of Pacific Rim Regionalism , 2001. His articles have appeared in many of the leading international relations journals. He was the founding editor of the Cambridge University Press Cambridge Asia-Pacific Studies series, and is on the editorial boards of Pacific Affairs, International Relations, International Relations of the Asia-Pacific, and Global Economic Review. He was the first winner of the Australasian Political Studies Association's L.F. Crisp medal. His research interests centre on global political economy, especially the fields of trade and production, and on Australian foreign policy.

Dr. Susumu Yamakage is the Dean of the Graduate School, as well as the College, of Arts and Sciences. He has been Professor at the University of Tokyo, Komaba since 1991. Prior to his current position, he was Research Associate at the Center for Southeast Asian Studies, Kyoto University (1976-1980), Associate Professor, the University of Tokyo, Komaba (1980-1991). He was Director of the Graduate Program on Human Security at the University of Tokyo from 2003-2006 as well as 2008-2009. His specialized fields are international relations theory, comparative regional systems, and international relations in Southeast Asia as well as Asia-Pacific. He is also developing methods of multi-agent simulation in social sciences. Dr. Yamakage received his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1982.
