RIETI policy on the protection of personal information

The Research Institute of Economy, Trade and Industry manages and operates its website in full recognition that the personal information provided by users is the important property of each user. As such, RIETI takes the utmost care to ensure the appropriate protection of such information. Personal information collected from users of the RIETI website shall be handled appropriately in accordance with the provisions of the Law Concerning the Protection of Personal Information Held by Incorporated Administrative Agencies (tentative translation), the Cabinet order for the implementation of the aforementioned law, and "RIETI Regulations on the Protection and Management of Personal Information."

Collection of personal information

RIETI asks users to provide personal information when they:

  1. Subscribe to RIETI newsletters and other electronic publications;
  2. Request publications, information, and materials;
  3. Register to participate in symposiums, seminars, and other events;
  4. Respond to questionnaires;
  5. Post comments in response to columns and other items published on the RIETI website;
  6. Apply for job openings at RIETI;
  7. Make inquiries to RIETI.

Personal information may include contact information - e.g., name, address, affiliation (company or school), job title, e-mail address, telephone number and facsimile number - and, in the case of application for a research post, information concerning the applicant's career history. RIETI shall handle such personal information thus gathered for purposes within the designated scope in accordance with the provisions of applicable laws and regulations and, unless specifically required by law, shall not release such personal information to any third party. RIETI does not collect any information that can identify individuals through the use of cookies.

Use of collected personal information

Personal information submitted to RIETI will be used solely for internal purposes. These include any forms of communication from RIETI, sending questionnaires for improving RIETI's work quality, the administering of symposiums and seminars hosted, co-hosted, or sponsored by RIETI, sending invitations for various events, sending PR-related materials, and using for reference in creating content for the RIETI website. RIETI shall handle such personal information properly within the scope of the above mentioned internal purposes and, unless specifically required by the laws and regulations or given informed consent by the individual, shall not release it to any third party.

Disclosure, correction and suspension of use of personal information

Individual users may request the disclosure, correction or suspension of use of personal information collected or held by RIETI in accordance with provisions under the Law Concerning the Protection of Personal Information Held by Incorporated Administrative Agencies.

Security

In order to prevent unauthorized disclosure of personal information to third parties or alteration of such information, RIETI uses the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) codification for the registration of e-mail address as well as for the transmission of comments. This encrypted communication system uses advanced 128 bit SSL encryption; users are asked to use a web browser compatible with this encryption system.

Access log

RIETI keeps records of access logs and stores information including Internet domain names and IP addresses of users, as well as the type of browser and operating system used. The information contained in the access log shall not be used for any purpose other than for statistical analysis of the number of "hits" on the RIETI website and for diagnosis of server problems. The results of such statistical analysis shall be used to analyze trends in user visits to the website, which are then used as reference for ongoing operation and management of the RIETI website.

Revision of privacy policy

RIETI may change all or part of the privacy policy stipulated on this page in accordance with changes in the content of RIETI website services or the development of technology. Any revisions made to the policy shall be published on the RIETI website.
