ASAKAWA Kazuhiro

Faculty Fellow, RIETI / Professor of Organizations and Strategy, Graduate School of Business Administration, Keio University

Professor Asakawa has been with Keio University since 1995, after he working for the Industrial Bank of Japan since 1985. He was also Visiting Scholar at the Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Visiting Associate Professor, McGill Japan MBA Program, McGill University. He sits at the board of numerous societies and journals, including The Asia Pacific Journal of Management, Journal of International Business Studies, Asia Academy of Management, Japan Academy of International Business, and Organizational Science. Professor Asakawa holds a Ph.D. in Management from INSEAD and an MBA from Harvard Business School. His recent work appeared in Research Policy, R&D Management, Organization Studies, and California Management Review


Ahmed BOUNFOUR

Professor, Innovation Policy and Strategic Management, University of Paris XI / Professor, University of Marne-La-Vallée

He was previously Director for high tech programmes within Euroconsult, especially in charge for space projects (telecommunications and Earth Observation).
Ahmed Bounfour has conducted many assignments of European industrial competitiveness, in particular for the European Commission (DG Internal Market, DG Enterprise, DG INFSO, DG Research), the European Space Agency, the Ministry of Industry (France), the Ministry of Telecommunications (France) and CNES- Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales. Professor Bounfour has a Ph.D. in economics and strategic planning from the Paris-Dauphine University.

His recent works include: Intellectual Capital for Communities, Nations, Regions and Cities, Elsevier Butterworth-Heinemann, Boston, MA (coedited with Leif Edvinsson), 2005; Innovation and Intangible Assets , special issue for R&D Management, March 2005; The Management of Intangibles, The Organization's Most Valuable Assets, Routledge, London & New York. 2003


Leif EDVINSSON

Adjunct Professor of Intellectual Capital, Lund University / Inspirator and CEO, Universal Networking Intellectual Capital (UNIC)

Professor Edvinsson is on the Board of Directors of several knowledge intensive enterprises among others, the Swedish Brain Research Foundation as well as the Center for Molecular Medicine at Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden. He is also one of the High Level Experts working for the European Commission on guidance for IC reporting, as well as core founding member of The New Club of Paris. Since 2000 he has been the Honorary Chairman of the UK based Henley KM Forum. He was formerly Vice President and the world's first Corporate Director of Intellectual Capital at Skandia a global financial service enterprise, Senior Vice President for Training and Development of S-E Bank, and President and Chairman of Consultus AB, a Stockholm-based consulting company. Professor Leif Edvinsson holds an MBA from the University of California at Berkeley, USA.

He is the author of numerous articles on the service industry and Intellectual Capital, among which, recently, Intellectual Capital for Communities, Nations, Regions and Cities co-edited with professor A. Bounfour.


HASHIKAWA Masato

General Manager, Investor Relations Department, Shiseido Co., Ltd

Prior to his current position as General Manager, Investor Relations Department at Shiseido Co. Ltd., he was General Manager (2000-2002) and prior to that, deputy to the General Manager (1997-2000), of Investor Relations Group at the Financial Department, the General Office at the Administration Department (1984-1997) and Advertising Department (1978-1984). He received his Bachelor of Laws from Keio University.


HOSOYA Yuji

Director of Research, RIETI

After graduating from the University of Tokyo, Mr. Hosoya entered the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (now the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry). Previously, he held numerous important posts including Director of Research of the Research Institute of International Trade and Industry, and Director for Evaluation and Inspection at the Administrative Evaluation Bureau of Ministry of Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts, and Telecommunications. He has also taught at Shinshu University as an associate professor from 1992. He has a Master's degree from Yale University.


KARIYA Takeaki

Faculty Fellow, RIETI / Professor of Financial Engineering and Management and Dean, Graduate School of Global business, Meiji University

Professor Kariya is also Visiting Professor of the Institute of Economic Research at Kyoto University. His previous carrier includes assignment as Professor of Institute of Economic Research and Head of Research Center for Financial Engineering at Kyoto University (2000-2004), Research Executive at the IBJ-DL Financial Technology (1998-2000), and Professor (1985-1998), Associate Professor (1978-1985), Assistant Professor (1975-1978) at Institute of Economic Research, Hitotsubashi University. Professor Kariya has received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Kyushu University.

KIMURA Hidemi

Fellow, RIETI

Prior to her current position, Ms. Kimura served as Resource Management Officer at The World Bank (2000-2003). After joining the Ministry of Finance in 1990, she worked at various positions such as Deputy Director of Government Financial Institution Division (1998-1999), Managing Director of Fujieda Local Tax Office at National Tax Agency (1997-1998), Deputy Director of Overall Coordination Division (1997), Section Chief of Research Division at the Institute of Fiscal and Monetary Policy (1994-1996). Ms. Kimura received her MBA from Fuqua School of Business, Duke University.

KIMURA Satoru

Professor, Graduate School of Global Business, Meiji University

After joining the Industrial Bank of Japan, he served as Director of Mizuho DL Financial Technology (2002-2004), Director of IBJ (Industrial Bank of Japan) Financial Technology (1999-2002), and Chief of Investment Technology Development Group of Financial Engineering Department of IBJ (1990-1999), In 1974, Professor Kimura received his Bachelor of Science from Waseda University.

Mart KIVIKAS

Partner & CEO, Wissenskapital Edvinsson & Kivikas GmbH

In 2001, Mr. Kivikas founded together with Prof. Leif Edvinsson Wissenskapital GmbH in Germany. Prior to this, Mr. Kivikas worked ten years mainly as a controller in companies such as Skanska AB (building and construction) and Unilever. He received his degree in Business Administration from the Stockholm School Economics in 1991.

MOTOHASHI Kazuyuki

After joining the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) (presently: Ministry of Economy, Trade and industry (METI)), Professor Motohashi served as Head of Public Affairs Office, Trade Policy Bureau at METI (1999-2000), Deputy Director of Planning Division, SME Agency (1998-1999), and Economist of Directorate for Science, Technology and Industry at OECD (1995-1998). Professor Motohashi received his Ph,D. in Business and Commerce from Keio University. He has several publications on innovation research in books and academic journals, including Research Policy, Economics of Innovation and New Technology and Journal of Japanese and International Economies.


NEZU Risaburo

Director, RIETI

Mr. Nezu has served as Director at RIETI since 2001. Since 2004, he has also been senior managing director at the Fujitsu Research Institute (FRI). Mr. Nezu serves concurrently as senior executive fellow at FRI's Economic Research Center, a post he has held since 2001. He became director general for the Directorate of Science, Technology and Industry of the OECD in 1995, and councilor at the Permanent Mission of Delegation of Japan to the OECD in 1984. Mr. Nezu joined MITI (now METI) after graduating from the University of Tokyo's Faculty of Economics in 1970, later going on to obtain an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1975.

NODA Kentaro

Director, Policy Planning Department, Environmentally Sustainable Development Group, Development Bank of Japan

Mr. Noda has also a taught as part-time Lecturer at Kagawa University, Ehime University, Ritsumeikan University, Waseda University, and a member of various government related committees. Prior to his current position, he was Director of Planning and Research Division at the Shikoku Branch Office (2002-2004), Deputy Resident Officer at the Los Angels Office, and Assistant to Director of Industrial Technology Department. He graduated from Keio University in 1986.


OIKAWA Kozo

Prior to his current position, Mr. Oikawa served as Senior Executive Director, Development Bank of Japan (2003-2005); Advisor, Nomura Research Institute, Ltd.(20003-2005); Research Counselor, TEPIA (2002-2003); Commissioner, Japan Patent Office(2000); Director-General, Bureau of Equipment, Japan Defense Agency(1998); Director-General for Policy Coordination, Minister's Secretariat (1997); Councilor, Cabinet Secretariat; Deputy Director-General for Security Export Control, International Trade Administration Bureau (1994); Director, Coordination Division, Bureau of Equipment, Japan Defense Agency; Director, Small Enterprise Policy Division, Small and Medium Enterprise Agency; Counselor, Japanese Mission to European Community, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1998); Director, Paper, Pulp & Printing Division, Consumer Goods Industries Bureau (1986). He graduated from the University of Tokyo with a B.A. in economics.


SUMITA Takayuki

Director, Intellectual Property Policy Office, Economic and Industrial Policy Bureau, METI

Since June 2004, Mr. Sumita has been working as a director, IPR policy Office with the wider authority covering the Intellectual Asset Management. Prior to his current position, he was Director for FTA/EPA in 2001, where he played a central role in planning the overall strategy toward the East Asia Economic Partnership and in negotiating with Mexico and ASEAN countries. He has also served as Deputy Director of Industrial Policy Bureau and the Energy Agency after an assignment at the Environment Agency. After working for Japan Patent Office, Security Export Control Office and Software Division, he studied at the Graduate School for Foreign Service, Georgetown University from 1991 to 1993. Mr. Sumita graduated from The University of Tokyo in1985.


TANAKA Nobuo

Director for Science, Technology and Industry, OECD

Mr. Tanaka has been Director for Science, Technology and Industry at the Paris-based Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) since August 2004, with responsibility for a broad range of issues including science policy, information and communication technologies, economic and statistical analyses, biosciences, and sectoral issues. Mr. Tanaka heads the internal OECD Steering Group for the Centre for Entrepreneurship. Within METI, he has held a broad range of high level posts, Deputy-Director of the General Affairs Division, Machinery and Information Industries Bureau, Personnel Division, Director of International Nuclear Energy Affairs of the Natural Resources and Energy Agency. He first joined the OECD in 1989 as Deputy Director of the Directorate for Science, Technology and Industry, and was promoted to Director in 1992. In 1995, he returned to METI as Director of the Industrial Finance Division. He has since worked in METI in high ranking positions, the most recent being Director-General, Multilateral Trade System Department, Trade Policy Bureau. He joined MITI (presently: Ministry of Economy, Trade and industry (METI)) in 1973. Mr. Tanaka has a degree in Economics from the University of Tokyo and an MBA from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio.


YAMAGUCHI Fujio

Faculty Fellow, RIETI / Professor, Graduate School of Global Business, Meiji University

Professor Yamaguchi is also Manager of the Department of Business Analysis at the Institute of Politics and Economy. Previously, he was Professor at the Graduate School of International Management (2001-2004), Professor at the Department of International Politics, Economics and Business (1999-2001) and Associate Professor at the Department of International Politics, Economics and Business (1992-1999) at Aoyama Gakuin University, and Associate professor (1989-1992) and Lecturer (1987-1989) at the Department of Economics at Kanagawa University. Professor Yamaguchi holds a PhD in economics from the University of Tokyo. His major works include: Managerial Accounting Hisrory of NYKLine, Hakuto Shobo, Awards of Japan Accounting History Association in2001; "Monetary and Non Monetary Accounting at Mitsubishi Mines" monthly Report 1894-1906, Mitsubishi Archives Review, The Mitsubishi Economic Institute,Vol4, 2003


YOSHITOMI Masaru

President and CRO, RIETI

Prior to his current post, Dr. Yoshitomi was Dean of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Institute, Tokyo (1999-2003). He was also Visiting Executive Professor at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania (1993-98). Dr. Yoshitomi served as Director-General, Coordination Bureau at the Economic Planning Agency (EPA) (1991-92); Director-General, Economic Research Institute, EPA (1987-91); and Director, Economics and Statistics Department, OECD, Paris (1984-87). He also served as an economist at the IMF (Washington, D.C.) (1970-74). He holds a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Tokyo.
