RIETI Special Seminar

Evolution of Industry Clusters: Silicon Valley and Detroit

  • Program

Announcement

RIETI Special Seminar, which was scheduled on Friday March 25th, has been cancelled because the Second Asia-Pacific Innovation Conference on March 28-29 (hosted by Hitotsubashi University, in collaboration with RIETI and WIPO) has been cancelled and overseas professors will not travel to Japan due to the current situation.
We apologize to those of you who were already planning to come.

Bolstering the mechanism that spurs both the birth and growth of new industries is a key issue for development of the Japanese economy. Innovation systems in the United States and Japan differ in terms of the capacity to innovate industries and in the performance when launching new businesses. Innovation within industries is not only generated by technological ventures; diversification and spin-offs by existing companies also play an important role. For this seminar, we have invited Professor Steven KLEPPER of Carnegie Mellon University. Professor Klepper has engaged in pioneering research on the growth of companies and industries for many years. In this seminar, he aims to enrich our understanding of the mechanism facilitating the birth and growth of new industries and will discuss the implications of the mechanism in terms of future policies, based on studies and the experience gained in the United States. Professor Klepper received the 2011 Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research for his significant contributions to our understanding of the role of new firm entry in innovation and economic growth. We look forward to a fruitful presentation and worthwhile Q&A session.
