Metanational Management and Global Innovation: The Case of the TFT-LCD Industry

ASAKAWA Kazuhiro

Faculty Fellow, RIETI / Professor, Graduate School of Business Administration, Keio University

Professor Asakawa has been with Keio University since 1995, following his tenure at the Industrial Bank of Japan in 1985. He has also served as Visiting Scholar at the Sloan School of Management of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Visiting Associate Professor, McGill MBA Japan program, McGill University; Affiliate of Sloan Industry Studies Program; and Visiting Faculty at the Vienna University of Economics. Professor Asakawa sits on the boards of numerous societies and journals, including the Journal of International Management, The Asia Pacific Journal of Management, Journal of International Business Studies, Asia Academy of Management, Japan Academy of International Business, and Organizational Science. He served as the Program Chair for the Fifth Asia Academy of Management Conference in 2006. Professor Asakawa holds a Ph.D. in Management from INSEAD and an M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School. His recent work has appeared in Research Policy, R&D Management, Organization Studies, and California Management Review, among others.


FUKUDA Hidetaka

Prior to his current position, Mr. Fukuda served as Director, Consumer Policy Division, Consumer Affairs Department, METI (2005); Director, Information and Communication Electronics Division (2003); CTO, Commerce and Information Policy Bureau, Director, IT-Industry Division, METI (2002); Director, IT-Industry Office, Commerce and Information Policy Bureau, METI (2001); Deputy Director-General, JETRO San Francisco (1998); Director, Machinery and Information Industries Policy Planning (1997); Director, Office for the Promotion of Academia-Industry Cooperation, Director for Technology Policy Planning (1995). Mr. Fukuda served with RIETI as a Consulting Fellow (2002-'03) and Senior Fellow (2001-'02). He received his Master's degree from the School of Engineering, the University of Tokyo.


KONOMI Yoshinobu

Professor, Graduate School of Business Administration, Keio University

Professor Konomi has worked in organizations including Mitsubishi Corp. (1967-'69), Mitsui & Co. (1980-'83), Copal Co., Ltd. (1985-'91), and as an Adviser at Chuo Coopers & Lybrand (1988-'91). He served as an Advisory Board Member for the Center for Asia Pacific Policy at the RAND Corporation (1989-'96). Professor Konomi has been with the Graduate School of Business Administration at Keio University since 1995. His expertise includes technology management, turnaround management, business simulation, and management innovation. He is also an Associate of Certified Turnaround Professionals in Japan as well as Chairman at the Turnaround Management Association in Japan.


MATSUMOTO Yoichi

Mr. Matsumoto studies corporate strategy in the consumer electronics industries at Keio University. He is also affiliated with the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Research Office for Innovation Management, Technology Information Department, where he is in charge of the Corporate Innovation System Renaissance Project (Renaissance Project). Thomas MURTHA

Professor of Management, College of Business Administration, University of Illinois at Chicago and Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota

Dr. Murtha is Professor of Management in the College of Business Administration at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and also affiliated with the Strategic Management Research Center at the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota. He is the co-author of Managing New Industry Creation: Global Knowledge Formation and Entrepreneurship in High Technology, a book about the corporate strategies and business history of the Flat Panel Display Industry (Stanford University Press, December, 2001). He is a co-coordinator of the current Alfred P. Sloan Foundation-sponsored research network on globalization of industries. He received his Ph.D. from New York University and has served on the faculty and as coordinator of doctoral studies in international business at the University of Michigan Business School. His research has appeared in such outlets as The Strategic Management Journal, The Journal of Law, Economics and Organization, The Academy of Management Journal, and The Journal of International Business Studies. He is a former Associate Editor and current Department Editor of the Journal of International Business Studies, responsible for the Technology and Innovation topic area.


NAGAOKA Sadao

Research Counselor, RIETI / Director and Professor, Institute of Innovation Research, Hitotsubashi University

Professor Nagaoka has been Director (since April 2004) and Professor (since 1997) at the Institute of Innovation Research at Hitotsubashi University. Formerly he served as Professor in the Institute of Business Research at Hitotsubashi University (1996-'97), Professor in the Faculty of Economics at Seikei University (1992-'96) and Director of the Office for Russia and Eastern Europe at MITI (presently METI)(1990-'92). He obtained his Ph.D. in Economics in 1990 and M.S. in Management in 1980, both from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and his B.E. in Engineering from the University of Tokyo in 1975. His fields of specialization are innovation and industrial organization.

NAKATA Yukihiko

Professor, Graduate School of Management, Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University

Dr. Nakata received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Kobe University in 1969 and 1971 and Ph.D. of Engineering from Osaka University in 1992. He joined Sharp Corporation, Central Research Laboratories in 1971. He has been engaged in the R&D of electroluminescence (EL) devices, solar cells, and tin film transistor for liquid crystal display (LCD). Dr. Nakata worked at Sharp Microelectronics Technology as a Deputy General Manager of the LCD Group and Sharp Laboratories of America as a Director of LCD from 1997-2000. He worked at the LCD Laboratories, Sharp Corporation, Japan as a Chief Technical Research Fellow from 2000. He also worked at Advanced LCD Technologies Development Center Co. Ltd., Yokohama. Dr. Nakata joined Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University as a Professor from 2004. He received the Chairman's Award of the Japan Institute of Invention and Innovation as a pioneer of EL.


OIKAWA Kozo

Prior to his current position, Mr. Oikawa served as Senior Executive Director, Development Bank of Japan (2003-'05); Advisor, Nomura Research Institute, Ltd. (2002'03); Research Counselor, TEPIA (2002-'03) Commissioner, Japan Patent Office; Director-General Bureau of Equipment, Japan Defense Agency; Director-General for Policy Coordination, Minister's Secretariat; Councilor, Cabinet Secretariat; Deputy Director-General for Security Export Control, International Trade Administration Bureau; Director, Coordination Division, Bureau of Equipment, Japan Defense Agency; Director, Small Enterprise Policy Division, Small and Medium Enterprise Agency; Counselor, Japanese Mission to European Community, Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Director, Paper, Pulp & Printing Division, Consumer Goods Industries Bureau. Mr. Oikawa graduated from the University of Tokyo with a B.A. in Economics.


ONOZATO Mitsuru

Mr. Onozato joined Tokyo Electron in 1977. Prior to his current position, he served as Senior Vice President, Sales; Executive Corporate Staff, Etching System Dept.; Tokyo Electron America Inc.; Regional Manager, Diffusion System Dept.; Automatic Test Equipment Dept. and Test System Dept. He has served as Senior Vice President, FPD General Manager, FPD Division since 2004.


SANBONMATSU Susumu

Consulting Fellow, RIETI / Senior Researcher, Organization for Small & Medium Enterprises and Regional Innovation, JAPAN / Visiting Professor, Hitotsubashi University

Mr. Sanbonmatsu has served at positions including Senior Fellow at RIETI, Director-General at Training Institute of Economy, Trade and Industry, Professor of Faculty of Policy Studies at the University of Shimane, and Deputy Director of the General Affairs Department of the Institute of Developing Economies at the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO). He has also worked as Director of the Economic Cooperation Division, Coordination Bureau, Economic Planning Agency; Information Management Division, Minister's Secretariat at METI; Planning Division, Planning Department at Headquarters of JETRO. He joined the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) in 1975. Mr. Sanbonmatsu holds B.A. degrees in Economics and Business Administration from the University of Tokyo. Jaeyong SONG

Associate Professor of Strategy & International Management, Graduate School of Business, Seoul National University

Professor Song is in the Faculty of Strategy and International business at Seoul National University. He has served as a Professor at Columbia University and Yonsei University. He received his Ph.D. from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Professor Song won the Richman Best Dissertation Award of the Academy of Management and the Gunner Hedlund Best Dissertation Award from the European International Business Association. His research has appeared in major international journals such as Management Science, Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Economics and Management Strategy, and Journal of Management. He was a primary investigator of the Samsung Way project commissioned by the Samsung Group in 2004. He also received research grants from the World Bank, the Asia Development Bank Research Institute, and the Long-term Credit Bank Research Institute (Japan).


TAMURA Yoshio

Senior Vice President, DisplaySearch Japan

Mr. Tamura graduated from the Chuo University Department of International Economics. He was appointed as Vice President and Japan Office Representative of DisplaySearch in February, 2000. He has 15 years experience in FPD market research including his former position with a market research firm. Mr. Tamura has maintained excellent relations with panel suppliers and key component suppliers, resulting in broad improvements to DisplaySearch's analysis. He supervises many of DisplaySearch's analytical reports. He has been invited as a speaker at numerous display conferences in the U.S., Japan, Korea, and Taiwan, offering commentary to many newspapers and FPD industry journals. Mr. Tamura has been Senior Vice President of DisplaySearch since 2005.


Shwu-Jen WANG

Professor Extraordinary, Faculty of Environmental Engineering, The University of Kitakyushu/ Managing Director, Research Institute of EDA Technologies

Prior to her current position, Professor Wang was Associate Professor in the Faculty of Environmental Engineering, the University of Kitakyushu, as well as Tokyo Researcher, Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research (2004-'05); LCD Industry Advisor, Information Industry Promoting Committee, Industry Bureau of Economics Ministry (2000'01); and Japan Correspondent, United Daily News (Taiwan) (1993-2003). She received her Ph.D. from the Graduate School of Economics, the University of Tokyo. YAHAGI Tsuneo

Since 2001, Professor Yahagi has been a board member of listed and unlisted companies. He served as Trustee at the International University of Japan (2005-present), Trustee at the Council for Public Policy (2002-present) and Chairman at the Suruga Institute (1991present). Professor Yahagi was Associate Professor (1982), Professor (1990), Mitsubishi Professor (2003), Adjunct Professor of the Graduate School of Medicine (2004), Dean of the Graduate School of Business (1995-'97), EVP of the University (1997-2001), and Chairman of the Board of Keio Academy of New York (1998-2002) at Keio University. Professor Yahagi also served as Founding Advisor at Monitor Inc. (1989-'95); Japan Representative of Robert Trent Jones II, International (1986-present); Co-founder of TechnoFront Inc. (1985), CFO at Fuji Die Co. (1972-'85), and a staff of the Mitsubishi Corp. (1965-'72). Professor Yahagi received his M.B.A. (1974, with distinction), M.S. in statistics (1977), and Ph.D. (1981) from Stanford University along with the AACSB Award for the outstanding Ph.D. dissertation in management.
